Washington DC Small Business Health Insurance
The District of Columbia is held to a higher standard than most areas of the country. As political leaders and those employed by the government fill every corner of the district with confidence and respect, so too are small businesses pressured to achieve success. In order to reach this success, small business employers need to locate quality employees who will remain loyal to the company as it grows. With staggering health costs, it should be no surprise that what attracts the best employees is a comprehensive health care package.
In 2003, 69.1% of small businesses offered their employees health insurance. For those who couldn't afford such an expense, the District of Columbia introduced consumer-driven health plans. These plans allow the employees to take charge of their own health care while saving small business owners money. In addition, insurance carriers are doing their best to help small businesses by offering plans that are affordable and comprehensive, in accordance with the district's insurance regulations. Washington DC’s Small Business Health Insurance Regulations
- Guaranteed issue and renewability is in effect; insurance carriers must offer employers of 2-50 workers the same health plans they offer other small businesses, and cannot cancel a plan due to the health status of a group member.
- Insurance carriers covering small businesses can charge higher group premiums due to the health status, and age of those enrolled, as well as due to the occupational hazard and location of the business. Annual increases of these premiums are limited.
- Self-employed workers with no employees cannot enroll in a group plan. They are eligible, however, to deduct 100% of the individual policy premiums paid on their tax return.
