Michigan Small Business Health Insurance

As the world headquarters to three large auto manufacturing giants-Ford, GM and Chrysler-Michigan may be known primarily for its large corporations. However, working in the smaller segments of the economy is a myriad of under-represented small businesses, striving to make a niche for themselves in the shadows of the giants. With 50.3% of small employers offering their employees health insurance, it is apparent that they are doing their best to attract quality customers. But with contribution costs for single coverage averaging over $3,133 million a year, these businesses are struggling against the wave.

Fortunately, the state of Michigan has stepped in to help, approving the Venture Michigan Fund. This is a $150 million pool to assist entrepreneurs. In addition, small employers can open a HSA for their employees to save on premium costs. Insurance carriers are doing their part as well by offering employers plans that are affordable and comprehensive, in accordance with the state's insurance regulations.

  • Guaranteed issue and renewability is in effect; insurance carriers must offer employers of 2-50 workers the same health plans they offer other small businesses, and cannot cancel a plan due to the health status of a group member. Minimum contribution or enrollment clauses may be imposed.

  • Unless coverage is through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, insurance carriers can impose a higher premium due to someone in the group being seriously ill.

  • Self-employed workers with no employees can enroll in a group plan such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. However, insurers that offer such coverage can apply a six-month pre-existing exclusion. In addition, carriers can increase yearly premiums by 25%.
