CareFirst BlueChoice HMO Plans:
These products offer comprehensive coverage and the flexibility to choose from a PCP network of over 2,600 providers. HMOs provide a significant cost savings to both the employer and employee, with the reliabililty and major medical coverage the BlueCross BlueShield name is known for. CareFirst BCBS offers two variations on the standard HMO, unique in their treatment of the PCP referral: BlueChoice HMO and BlueChoice HMO Open Access.
CareFirst BlueChoice POS Plans:
A POS solution offers the affordability of an HMO coupled with the freedom of provider choice which typically characterizes a PPO. Members much choose a Primary Care Physician upon enrollment, but then retain the freedom to view any network provider without a referral. Plus, file no paperwork for in-network treatment. Employers who elect CareFirst may choose between three POS options, BlueChoice Opt-Out Open Access, BlueChoice Opt-Out Plus Open Access and Maryland Point of Service.
CareFirst PPO Plans:
Preferred Provider Organization products (PPOs) give members access to a broad provider network, and the freedom to choose any provider in the network without a referral. With a PPO, the out-of-pocket costs are slightly higher, but it is a price many are willing to pay for more control and choice in their treatment.
