Alaska Small Business Health Insurance
In the land of beautiful white winters and warm, cozy houses, small business owners have found a niche. Alaska has less stringent insurance regulations than many others do. Still, those employers who can afford to offer their employees health insurance are spending $3,578 million dollars a year in contributions. For the small business owner, this cost can translate into loss of profit and ultimately, less chance of survival. However, in today's competitive economy it has become apparent that small businesses that offer no health insurance have little chance of competing with large corporations. In light of this Catch-22, insurance carriers in the state of Alaska have worked hard to provide the small business owner with access to group plans that are affordable and satisfactory, in accordance with the state's insurance regulations.

Alaska’s Small Business Health Insurance Regulations
- Insurers have to offer each employer of 2-50 employees the same health insurance plans they offer to other employers in the state regardless of health or claims experience of the group. For groups with poor claims experience, carriers can only increase their annual premiums by 15%.
- Insurance companies must initially offer coverage to all eligible employees of a small business. An eligible employee works thirty or more hours a week.
- Insurance cannot be cancelled due to illness of one member of the group, as long as the small business has 75% of their workers enrolled in the insurance plan.
- There is a limit to how much more Alaskan insurance companies can charge a small business due to the risk or health of members enrolled in a group plan.
- Self-employed individuals with no other workers are now eligible to enroll in a small business health plan. However, premiums can only be deducted from taxes if the self-employed are under an individual plan.
